Law dictionaries
There are different types of legal dictionaries: the explanatory, specialised, and the interpretive.
A. Explanatory dictionaries. These give explanations of legal words and are used the same way ordinary dictionaries are used. e.g.
1. Jowitt's Dictionary of English Law.
2. Mozley & Whiteley's Law Dictionary.
3. Osborn's Concise Law Dictionary.
4. Curzon, L.B. Dictionary of Law.
B. There are also specialised works, e.g.:
1. Lawyers’ Latin.
2. Baker, J.H. Manual of Law French.
3. Le Docte, E. Legal Dictionary in Four Languages.
4. James, S. A Dictionary of Taxation.
C. Interpretive dictionaries. List words or phrases that have been defined by the courts or in legislation, e.g.:
1. Stroud's Judicial Dictionary of Words and Phrases.
2. Words and Phrases Legally Defined.
Judicial definitions can also be traced by looking under the heading "Words and Phrases" in the indexes to law reports, digests, etc.
