I've just found out that Scots Law is distinct from English Law in terms of being a 'mixed legal system'. (Mainly thanks to Edwards I and III). Anyway, Canada, South Africa and various other Commonweath nations have suffered the same legal fate, and here is an excellent instructional video from Canada on how to deal with the Civil Law elements that appear to be an inherent part of Scots Law, and how to use them to your (our) advantage:
