Direct earnings attachment DEA

At the moment my employer has received a letter from debt management (DEA) asking for more information about me regarding recovery of monies owed to DWP. Does my employer have to reply to this as it is only asking for information about me and not actually stating he has to apply DEA yet (but I am sure that will be the next step)! This has come after 16 years of a so called debt that I have no information, proof or paperwork about from them.
I did send them a statute of limitation letter which they just replied to saying they can't take me to court but can try other means!

Just a thought: If your employer hands your details to the DWP, then is he not breaching the Data protection Act?

As an update. My employer did not furnish the DWP with my details and now today I have received notification that they are going to attach a DEA to my wages. How on earth can anyone just go to your employer with a DEA over an alleged debt of over 16 years that has never been proven is beyond me.
